Although the stunning beauty of the large 4-mile basin and its yachts are the main attraction here with the expected tourist watering places on shore, there is one ancient monument worthy of note: an old medieval fortress standing on the promontory overlooking the bay. It was rebuilt by Suleyman the Magnificent in 1522, after assembling a mighty fleet and making the conquest of the nearby island of Rhodes.
Today the fortress/castle is a museum with inscriptions and sculptures and a panoramic view of the harbor. Located in the "old quarter" there are charming alleyways to stroll around and view the old renovated Greek houses.
